Tomato Upma | Tomato Uppittu

Upma and Poha are two breakfast dishes I make regularly as they are quick to prepare with easily available ingredients. Amongst the upma varieties, tomato upma is my favorite. The tang from the tomatoes perks up the overall flavor in any recipe. So is the case with this upma. its mild tangy and well as spicy. To make Tomato Upma you need few ingredients only. Depending on your choice of vegetables, you can also add green Peas, bean's too. I have only added tomatoes and given a masala taste using Garam Masala powder. You can also add Bisi bele bath masala powder or vangi bath powder in this tomato Upma to make a difference in taste each time of preparation. Like Regular upma, tomato upma is best served hot drizzled with a bit of ghee on top.

    • 2 strands Curry leaves
    • 1 tsp mustard
    • 1 tsp Chana Dhal
    • 1/2 tsp Urad Dhal
    • 2 green chilli fine Chops
    • 2 tbsp ground nuts
    • 1 tbsp ginger-garlic fine chopped
    • 1 tomato chopped
    • 1 onion chopped
    • 1 tsp Garam Masala powder
    • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
    • 2 tbsp Ghee
    • 2 cups water
    • 1 cup sooji
    • salt
  • Tomato Upma | Tomato Uppittu Method-1

    1) Heat 1 tbsp Ghee. Splutter the musturd, add Curry leaves, green Chilli, urad dal, Chana dal, ground nut.
    2) Add ginger-garlic, onion followed by turmeric powder & Garam Masala powder.
    3) Stir fry 5 minutes under low heat until onion turns light brown, add the tomato. Mix well. Cook for another 2-3 minutes.
    4) Boil 2 cup of water. Add the boiling water into the fried content, add salt mix well.
    5) Add the sooji into the boiled water. Stir gently to mix well.
    6) Cook under low heat for 1-2 minutes and switch off the flame. Sooji is done and ready to be served. Add a tbsp Ghee over it and spread evenly.

    Note : You can add raisen, cashew.
    This is a plain tomato upma without addition of vegetables. This is very quick and tastes best along when cooked using Ghee. You can also garnish it with grated coconut or fine Chops of Coriander leaves.
