Squid curry | Bondaas curry ( Konkan )

Squid or cuttlefish or Samudra zeeb/Mankios (Konkani) or Bondas (Tulu) as we call it in Mangalore. Squids, when consumed are quite nutritious. Have them grilled or fry them in cooking oil either plain or battered, squids are simply irresistible and lip-smacking! When you add them to different recipes or serve them with assorted dips, squids never fail to displease your taste buds.they are used in making a famous appetizer, dry dish or curries.I have tried many varieties of squid dishes, this time I made a simple konkan variety of squid curry which tastes great with the garlic and curry leaves aroma.

    • 1/2 kg squid
    • 1 large sized onion finely chopped
    • 5 strands of Curry leaves

    Curry Masala ( Grind the following to smooth paste ) :

    • 1/2 coconut grate
    • 15 kasmiri Red chilli (Roasted)
    • 1 Tbsp Coriander seeds (Roasted)
    • 1/2 tbsp cumin seeds (Roasted)
    • 8 Garlic pods (fried till you get nice aroma)
    • 1 tsp turmaric
    • 1 small marble size Tamerind

    Make sure you clean the squid well.

    Cut the squids neatly into roundels using a sharp knife. Separate the tencles and cut them into even pieces.

    Take a wide vessel, heat 2 tbsp coconut oil. Add the onion and fry till golden brown.

    When the onions are done, add the ground paste followed by fresh curry leaves.Adjust the salt in gravy, add minimum water and do not make the gravy dilute.

    Let the gravy boil well. Now add the squid to the boiling gravy and cook till they are done. Keep the flame medium to low and stir the curry well while the squid cooks into the gravy. When done serve with boiled rice or have it along dosa / idli. They are just yum when had after 4-5 hours of preparation.
